One of the most potent herbs in Ayurveda, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), grows in the drier regions of India, China, Nepal and Yemen as a small perennial shrubs, 14-30 inches high with tuberous roots 2 1⁄2 – 6 1⁄2 feet long.
Alkaloids are the main bioactive compounds of the ashwagandha root; withanine and withanolides are the main ones (steroidal lactones). Saponins, choline, beta-sitosterol, chlorogenic acid, scopoletin, withaferin, glycosides withanolide, sitoindosides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides are other constituents. Ashwagandha is low in fat and a good source of iron, calcium, potassium, copper, zinc and manganese, as well as a source of dietary fibre.
