Lotus Root: Anatomy, Physiology and Health Benefits

The lotus flower, particularly the species Nelumbo nucifera (also known as the sacred lotus), has significant medicinal and therapeutic properties.

Different parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

The tubular lotus root grows in muddy, oxygen-poor soil. It has oval holes that let it take in oxygen and float in water. This shape helps it store energy as starch. If it isn’t grinded (powdered) this root is commonly sliced and pickled, sautéed or baked.

Purewellness lotus powder is made from the by harvesting lotus flower from the water, washing its roots and peeling the outer skin of the lotus root, revealing the edible inner part.

Once fully dried, the lotus roots are ground into a fine powder. Lotus root is rich in various bioactive compounds that contribute to its health benefits

Vitamins in these roots play a crucial role for its benefits, particularly vitamin C, which acts as a potent antioxidant, boosting immune function and supporting skin health.

Additionally, B vitamins, including B6, riboflavin, and niacin, are vital for energy metabolism and maintaining a healthy Nervous system.

Minerals found in lotus root, such as potassium, manganese, and iron, further enhance its health promoting properties.

Potassium helps regulate blood pressure and supports heart health, while manganese is important for bone formation and metabolism. Iron plays a critical role in oxygen transport within the blood.

The high dietary fiber content in lotus root aids digestion, promotes gut health, and contributes to a feeling of fullness, which can support weight management.

Furthermore, lotus root is rich in antioxidants which help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. Other beneficial compounds include polysaccharides, which may help regulate blood sugar levels and boost the immune system, as well as alkaloids and saponins, known for their anti-inflammatory effects and cardiovascular benefits.

Now, how can I incorporate lotus root powder into my diet?

Adding lotus root powder to your diet is easy and versatile. If you’re consuming it on its own, start with 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon (approximately 3–10 grams).

Keep in mind that it’s mostly fiber, allowing for higher doses compared to extracts rich in bioactive compounds.

You can use it as a thickening agent for sauces or dressings, enhancing both texture and nutrition. It can also be added to smoothies, soups, stews, and baked goods by replacing regular flour, as well as in porridge, oatmeal, or tea.

This ingredient is truly adaptable, offering numerous ways to enrich meals that the whole family will enjoy
